HIVE Blockchain Technologies Ltd. recently announced its financial results for fiscal year 2025. Today, the company is continuing that success with their constant adaptation to cryptocurrency mining and high-performance computer (HPC) worlds. Join LeeChiaJian as he breaks down HIVE’s past financial performance, strategic acquisitions and initiatives, and upcoming opportunities to arm investors with actionable intelligence.

Financial Performance Overview

HIVE announced total revenue of $115.2 million for FY25. Digital currency mining is still behind the vast majority of their revenue, bringing in $105.2 million. Bitcoin mining is still HIVE’s primary business. Its strategic diversification — high-performance computing (HPC) hosting services — welcomes fluffy margins of their own and has already raked in $10.0 million in revenues. This diversification is key to offsetting risks from Bitcoin price volatility and mining difficulty that are both on the rise.

The final nail in the company’s strategic re-orientation towards HPC was the big 3x growth in AI GPU revenue. HIVE’s HPC/AI Cloud Revenue for the quarter hit $10.1 million, up from just $3.4 million in FY2024 Q1. HIVE’s GPU fleet has grown rapidly as well, with over 5,000 GPUs today. This extraordinary expansion takes advantage of the explosive need for high performance computing resources in AI and machine learning. While the expansion has been great, it’s resulted in much higher operational costs. General and administrative (G&A) expenses took a jump to $16.6 million, up from $13.2 million in FY2024. The substantial jump is indicative of the costs associated with supporting the company’s ongoing global expansion within the digital currency mining and high-performance computing (HPC) sectors.

HIVE is currently undergoing a transition. It adeptly manages its legacy bitcoin mining business, while methodically forging ahead into the exploding HPC and AI industries. Although mining revenues still reign supreme, it is the growing share from HPC services that points the way to a smart diversification strategy.

Strategic Acquisition and Hashrate Expansion in Paraguay

In FY25, HIVE took a huge step in purchasing their first physical location in Paraguay. This strategic move is designed to greatly expand the independent Bitcoin miner’s self-mining capacity. This acquisition will increase our hashrate by about 6 EH/s in Phase 1 and another 6.5 EH/s in Phase 2. To put that into perspective, it amounts to a staggering 317% mining capacity increase! This expansion will increase HIVE’s hashpower from 6 Exahashes per second (EH/s) to a staggering 25 EH/s. If successful, we will meet this goal by September of 2025.

The Paraguay acquisition offers several strategic advantages. Phase 2 will use hydro-cooled ASICs, increasing overall efficiency and performance. This progress is instrumental to maintaining profitability as the mining industry faces a more competitive environment. The Yguazú facility uses hydro power. Plugging into HIVE’s focus on utilizing sustainable energy strikes an ideal chord with HOUZE’s mission and would drastically reduce operational electricity costs. HIVE's presence in Paraguay brings direct economic benefits to the region, including monthly U.S. dollar revenue to Paraguay’s national utility company, ANDE, supporting local infrastructure and growth. With the 200 MW Yguazú facility consisting of a further 100 MW expansion potential, this has provided ample future growth opportunities.

Nonetheless, while it is certainly possible to reach the ambitious 25 EH/s target by December 31, 2025, a wide array of challenges remain. As of March 31, 2025, HIVE’s operational hashrate was approximately 6.3 EH/s. This is a 40% jump from the 4.5 EH/s we had on 3/31/24. Since the end of Fiscal 2025, HIVE was able to successfully commission the first 100 MW at Yguazú—almost doubling its hashrate to 11.5 EH/s. To maintain the pace of this growth curve, HIVE needs to continue to operate successfully and address expected logistical and operational pitfalls.

Market Dynamics and Future Outlook

Several factors could influence HIVE's performance:

  • Bitcoin Price Volatility: HIVE's mining profitability is heavily dependent on Bitcoin prices, which can be volatile and unpredictable.

  • Increasing Global Hash Rate and Mining Difficulty: As more miners join the network, the hash rate and mining difficulty increase, which can negatively impact HIVE's mining revenues.

  • Intense Competition: HIVE faces intense competition in both its established Bitcoin mining operations and its emerging HPC and AI sectors.

HIVE is focusing on several key strategies:

  • Diversification into HPC/AI: Expanding its HPC capabilities allows HIVE to tap into a rapidly growing market and reduce its reliance on Bitcoin mining revenues.
  • Sustainable Energy Strategy: Utilizing hydro-powered facilities reduces operational costs and aligns with growing investor demand for environmentally responsible mining practices.
  • Technological Innovation: Investing in advanced mining hardware, such as the Bitmain S21+ Hydro ASICs, enhances efficiency and profitability.

HIVE has been aggressively increasing its installed hashrate, reaching 11 EH/s in the five weeks prior to this report. With the introduction of innovative new Bitmain S21+ Hydro ASICs contained in those next-gen hydro containers, the company expects to immediately jump to 18 EH/s by late summer. This advancement is another testament to HIVE’s dedication to scaling its mining capacity and becoming more competitive.
